Covid has changed the way we used to travel around since the pandemic hit all nations across the world. Many countries have decided to receive those who have already had the Covid vaccine. Others will only welcome travelers who have PCR tests with negative results.
If you are coming to Ghana in West Africa, these are now the most important things you should have:
A valid passport - You’ll need at least six (6) month’s valid passport so check your passport expiry date before booking. The Ghanaian embassy advises you place application between 3-4 weeks prior to your preferred departure date.
Visa - if traveling to Ghana as a foreigner, you will need to obtain a tourist’s visa in your home country. It takes from 10-15 days. Express or rapid visas can be obtained within 24 hours to 72 hours in some countries at an extra cost to the traveler. If you have an ECOWAS passport or card or you are a citizen of any West African country, you don’t need a visa. You would be fine with your ECOWAS card. Also Visa on arrival at the immigration point at the Kotoka International airport, Ghana is $150.00
Yellow Card Vaccination - The officials at the immigration will inspect your yellow fever vaccination certificate which is popularly referred to as “Yellow Card”. In this card, are proof of vaccination for Yellow Fever and hepatitis A&B.
Covid PCR Test - Every visitor must have a negative test report for the Covid-19 PCR test. It is important to perform this test within 72 hours of your travel date. Also you must wear a face mask during the flight. This is required even if you have had the Covid vaccine. Very soon the Covid-19 Vaccination Card might be required to visit almost every part of the world, but we don't know yet nor if that will be the case.
Health Declaration Form - All travelers entering Ghana, regardless of their nationality, age or any other consideration, must fill up the Health Declaration Form. It DOES NOT replace a visa. If your country requires a visa, the immigration officers will ask for your Visa when you enter the country. Keep in mind some nationalities will require a paper visa. Complete an online health declaration form pre-departure. All passengers may also be asked to complete hard copy self-declaration forms on the flight, confirming they are fit to travel and providing details to facilitate contact tracing.
